I recorded a large part of the mix I was playing at Dave Loren’s house party on Friday night. Special thanks to Brian and Guille as well as Dave for sorting out all of the logistics with the gear transport, noise complaints and drinks.

Well, now that all of the September music events have come and gone here in SF, I can now get on with making some music and dedicating more time to collaborating with some talented individuals out here. Love fest was loads of fun, with more music than you can shake a stick at. The first year of the Summer music conference was a blast. For being the first year, there were lots and lots of great parties and talented people in town from all over the US.
In the next coming months, I’ll be working in the Mission Arc-Aid studio here in the city with some friends. We’re converting a typical office space and making it into a fun little creative spot.. installing some studio gear and sound isolation devices so we don’t bug the neighbors.
I’ll be posting the results of this in the months to come.
Expect another DrumKill mix before the end of October. I have loads of new music to throw into the mix. Ultimately, I hope to get some solid templates in place for cranking out some new tracks pretty soon here. More than anything, I’m psyched to have met some great people who are psyched about the idea of collaborating.

There’s a typically baffling/silly interview with Aphex Twin in this month’s Future Music magazine. When asked for a kit list, he says: “Sure. Raveolution 309, the Raven Max, MC-909 limited edition, Quasimidi Van Helden, MAM Freebass 383, Roland DJ-70, E-15, SP-808, Akai S3200, Behringer MX602A and all the Behringer effects that copy other things.” When he’s asked which software he uses, he says “UPIC by Xenakis puts almost everything else to shame. It’s under 1mb and it shits on everyone.” UPIC was a ’70s experimental French system developed by Greek composer Iannis Xenakis, which is based on drawing on a graphics tablet. It’s somehow connected with CCMIX, where they talk about it running on a Windows 98 system. UPIC seems to have developed into Iannix, which you can download from this page. He also talks about liking Ableton Live, but preferring LiveSlice for beat editing/stretching. He uses Etymotic Research headphones. My favourite Aphex Twin track ever is the demo version of Windowlicker, where you can hear that the whole track is put together with samples of him singing.Posted on July 8th, 2006 by drumkill.

In keeping with the spirit of the original album, Brian Eno and David Byrne are offering for download all the multitracks on two of the songs (…) In line with Creative Commons licenses, you are free to edit, sample, and mutilate these tracks however you like. Add them to your own song, or create a new one.
Link. You can upload your remixes for other site visitors to hear and rate. (Thanks, Eric Steuer!)
Previously on BoingBoing:
- Byrne/Eno “Bush of Ghosts” tracks re-released under CC
- Missing Byrne/Eno track “Qu’ran” appears on blogs

Mar 29, 2006 – Show original item
Moog Music’s synths are beloved for their sound, playability, and quality standards . . . and the fact that they’re not ugly and boring. As true analog synths, they produce sound by directly controlling the electrical voltage that courses through their innards, something that is difficult to translate to digital instruments. But Moog keyboards are usually a luxury item, even though the late synth builder Bob Moog himself wanted to build a more affordable option. The Little Phatty is the “Moog nano” everyone has been waiting for, a basic but uncompromising mono synth that emphasizes live playing. Even if you can’t afford the $1500 limited edition with extras like Bob Moog’s name signed across the back, a $1000 “stage” option is coming later this spring. If this isn’t your thing, you had better accept that you won’t be able to shut up your local synth fanboy or girl for the next 12 months. Just lock them in a room with one of these for the year and drop off baloney sandwiches. They’ll be happier that way.

Taking to the streets to defend vintage synths in Japan
This Flickr Set shows synth geeks (and other people) marching to protest about the PSE law, which would (possibly, we’re not sure, and there might be an exemption for musical instruments) outlaw all vintage electronics. Love the guy waving a mixer. I don’t think they’re really committed to the cause – I want to see the birth of an utterly ruthless terrorist organisation devoted to the protection of dusty musical gear. Someone should kidnap the relevant minister’s family and torture them with copies of Country Moog: Switched on Nashville until the law is repealed. More on the law here, with better coverage here at Matrix Synth.
